{"id":2401,"date":"2022-01-25T16:55:44","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T00:55:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/?p=2401"},"modified":"2022-07-30T18:18:17","modified_gmt":"2022-07-31T01:18:17","slug":"rincon-trail-project-moves-forward-despite-outcry-from-paragliders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/2022\/01\/25\/rincon-trail-project-moves-forward-despite-outcry-from-paragliders\/","title":{"rendered":"Rincon Trail Project Moves Forward Despite Outcry from Paragliders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Carpinteria Planning Commission Chooses Option for \u2018Best Trail for the Most People\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Source of this article, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.com\/2022\/01\/25\/rincon-trail-project-moves-forward-despite-outcry-from-paragliders\/?fbclid=IwAR2m_R9zpYxP97RdLkE_U4pPa-ho2JUJaKqK_KaksdG1fnOZ4u89qnAQev8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Santa Barbara Independent, January 25, 2022<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Rincon Multi-Use Trail project \u2014 a 2,800-foot bike and pedestrian trail connecting the city of Carpinteria to Rincon Beach Park \u2014 is on the brink of construction, gaining approval at Carpinteria\u2019s Planning Commission once again last week despite public pushback from the city\u2019s \u201csoaring community,\u201d who fear for the future of their fly site.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2402\" style=\"width: 737px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Rincon-Trail.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2402\" src=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Rincon-Trail.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2402\" width=\"727\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Rincon-Trail.jpg 727w, https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Rincon-Trail-300x210.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A rendering of the proposed Rincon Multi-Use Trail along the 101 in Carpinteria.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A core group of paragliding and hang-gliding enthusiasts, whose launching point may be affected by the trail construction, showed up last Tuesday, January 18, in big numbers to try to convince the commission to choose the one of four proposed trail options that would leave their bluffs unaffected.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the concerns from the gliding community, the commissioners ultimately chose the trail that would be most environmentally sound according to the impact report and the option that would work best as part of the greater California Coastal Trail.<\/p>\n<p data-autoattached=\"true\">Principal Planner Nick Bobroff described the trail as a \u201ctricky, multi-jurisdictional project\u201d that requires the input and coordination from members of Carpinteria\u2019s city government, the County of Santa Barbara, CalTrans, and the Santa Barbara County Association of Governments.<\/p>\n<p>The hearing also marked the Carpinteria Planning Commission\u2019s certification of the Environmental Impact Report, which guided the four \u201calternative\u201d trail proposals. The choice ultimately came down to two options: the most environmentally friendly and non-intrusive Alternative Three and the option that avoided the gliders\u2019 favorite bluff, Alternative Four.<\/p>\n<p>Commissioner David Allen said he frequently walks the area with his wife and enjoys watching the gliders cut through the Carpinteria sky, but he said the long-term benefits of the Rincon trail will be something \u201cthat will be here for generations and generations,\u201d and, ultimately, Alternative Three is \u201cthe best trail for the most people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three out of four commissioners agreed, with Commissioner John Moyer pointing out that if the fourth option was chosen to appease the soaring community, those using the trail would be forced to reroute along the freeway and not-so-scenic views. \u201cThere\u2019s nothing on the freeway worth looking at, that\u2019s for sure; then you gotta breathe all the particulates,\u201d Moyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t hear anybody say you can\u2019t soar with this trail \u2014 and that would be Alternative Three \u2014 you just can\u2019t do it like you did before,\u201d Chair Jane Benefield said. \u201cThe most people that will benefit from this project are the general public, not the soaring community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The third option was chosen, and the Environmental Impact Report certified, in a 3-1 vote.
