But what about what you eat? Agriculture uses 80% of California&#8217;s water supply, and producing the food on your plate can require a surprising amount of water.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, there has been much debate recently about the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/opinion\/op-ed\/la-oe-gleason-almond-farmer-20150326-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">growing of almonds\u00a0<\/a>in the Central Valley.<\/p>\n<p>Almonds are especially thirsty in the southern San Joaquin. But there&#8217;s a lucrative overseas market for them so growers have been planting more and more trees. Basically, one almond requires a gallon of water to produce,&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/politics\/la-me-cap-drought-20150406-column.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote Times columnist<\/a> George Skelton.<\/p>\n<p>But almonds are far from the only thirsty foods. Others include beef, pork, lamb, chickpeas, lentils, peas, goat, mangoes and asparagus.<\/p>\n<p>Less thirsty crops? According to the Water Footprint Network, a Dutch nonprofit research group, proteins take considerably more water to produce than most fruits and vegetables.
