It\u2019s only accessible by steep footpaths that were created by visitors and are not maintained.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1272\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/RingeDam.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1272\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1272\" src=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/RingeDam-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"LOOK OUT BELOW\u2014Visitors will no longer be allowed at Rindge Dam due to safety and environmental factors. \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/RingeDam-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/RingeDam.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">LOOK OUT BELOW\u2014Visitors will no longer be allowed at Rindge Dam due to safety and environmental factors.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But that hasn\u2019t stopped cliff jumpers and hikers, who are attracted to the dam\u2019s 100-foot drop and deep, year-round pond.<\/p>\n<p>In the past five years authorities have reported one suicide and five significant injuries at the site.<\/p>\n<p>In October 2011, a 21-yearold <span class=\"pt_location_term\">Agoura Hills<\/span> resident jumped to his death from the top of the dam. The most recent injury took place last November, when a <span class=\"pt_location_term\">Winnetka<\/span> man fell 200 feet trying to access the dam.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie King, an environmental scientist for California State Parks, expressed concern at a Calabasas Environmental Commission meeting last fall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is very concerning for us. There are dangerous videos urging people to jump off the dam,\u201d King told the<span style=\"font-style: italic;\"> Acorn.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rescuers face obstacles, and response times are delayed in the area because of the remote location and difficult terrain, which also limit the amount of emergency equipment that can be brought in.<\/p>\n<p>Other safety factors include sanitation problems, as there are no restrooms or trash cans at the dam and no feasible way of providing them, creating a public health hazard.<\/p>\n<p>Human waste and trash from the area are washed into <span class=\"pt_location_term\">Malibu Creek<\/span>, <span class=\"pt_location_term\">Malibu Lagoon<\/span> and the ocean, endangering wildlife.<\/p>\n<p>The habitat is threatened by the uprooting of vegetation by hikers, whose footpaths serve as conduits for sediment into the creek. Excess sediment threatens the endangered southern steelhead trout that inhabit the creek below the dam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rindge Dam on Malibu Creek will be closed to the public starting Aug. 21.
