{"id":1061,"date":"2013-03-26T11:43:45","date_gmt":"2013-03-26T18:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/?p=1061"},"modified":"2022-08-02T17:27:05","modified_gmt":"2022-08-03T00:27:05","slug":"conejo-open-space-gets-hand-from-volunteers-to-build-trail-near-thousand-oaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/2013\/03\/26\/conejo-open-space-gets-hand-from-volunteers-to-build-trail-near-thousand-oaks\/","title":{"rendered":"Conejo Open Space gets hand from volunteers to build trail near Thousand Oaks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>One of the main access routes from Hill Canyon to the Western Plateau in the\u00a0 open space between Thousand Oaks and the Santa Rosa Valley received some much\u00a0 needed attention this past weekend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Source of this article: The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vcstar.com\/news\/2013\/mar\/26\/conejo-open-space-gets-hand-from-volunteers-to\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ventura County Star<\/a>, March 26, 2013<\/p>\n<p>About 80 volunteers helped to remove rocks and nonnative vegetation and\u00a0 improve drainage along two miles of an existing fire road that forms part of a\u00a0 new trail loop in the Conejo Canyons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been in disrepair for years,\u201d said Conejo Recreation and Park District\u00a0 Park Supervisor Matt Kouba who oversaw the trail work on Saturday March 23.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe brought in a big machine and did some of the rough work a couple of weeks\u00a0 ago and now we\u2019ve doing the hand work and shoring up some of the drainage and\u00a0 things like that,\u201d he said. \u201cIt went really well and everybody worked really\u00a0 hard. Now that gives us an artery to get up into the upper plateau to do the\u00a0 trails up there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_1062\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/125730_t6071.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1062\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1062\" title=\"125730_t607[1]\" src=\"http:\/\/www.venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/125730_t6071-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/125730_t6071-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/venturacountytrails.org\/WP\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/03\/125730_t6071.jpg 607w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1062\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Volunteer David Yarden, a mountain biker, cuts into a hill as Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency and volunteers built a trail.<\/p><\/div>It\u2019s all part of the Conejo Canyons Management Plan drawn up in 2010 by\u00a0 Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency, a joint powers agency between the city of\u00a0 Thousand Oaks and the Conejo Recreation and Park District.Kouba said the improved trail provides access to an overlook looking out over\u00a0 Camarillo. It will also facilitate the creation of new trails, one that will\u00a0 lead to a ridge overlooking the Santa Rosa Valley and one that will go up toward\u00a0 the area near to California Lutheran University.<\/p>\n<p>Conejo Open Space oversees 140 miles of trails and the 2010 plan identified\u00a0 33 miles of trails and 13 miles of new trails in Conejo Canyons, according to\u00a0 COSCA Manager Kristin Foord.<\/p>\n<p>She said the volunteers who come out to help are vital to achieving the\u00a0 agency\u2019s goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of us thought we could accomplish so much so quickly,\u201d Foord said. \u201cVolunteers have put so much energy and time into this and we\u2019re really\u00a0 accomplishing the plan and we\u2019re really proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith all the trail improvement, we\u2019re really excited about opening up this\u00a0 area to the public. The Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency was a building trail in the Hill Canyon\/Western Plateau area of Thousand Oaks.<\/p><\/div>In October 2012, volunteers helped smooth out and improve the Hill Canyon\u00a0 Trail, a flat, one-mile trail that connects to the Conejo Canyons Trail Bridge\u00a0 accessible from the county\u2019s Santa Rosa Park, on Hill Canyon Road off Santa Rosa\u00a0 Road. They also worked to build a new section of trail that creates a loop\u00a0 between the Hawk Canyon Trail and the Hill Canyon Trail.Among those who helped out at this past weekend\u2019s work day was Jeremy Boberg,\u00a0 9, who volunteered along with his twin brother Nils, elder brother Caleb, 15,\u00a0 and dad Jeff Boberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cleared out all the rocks and then we made it so the water wouldn\u2019t go\u00a0 all over the trail,\u201d said Jeremy. \u201cWe had shovels and a pick ax and stuff. We\u00a0 had to lever the rocks up and it was really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the second time members of the Boberg family from Thousand Oaks have\u00a0 volunteered to help improve the trails.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast year we did a trail that goes up the side of the ridge and we hiked it\u00a0 again with the rest of the family so they could see the work that we did and\u00a0 they wanted to come this year,\u201d Jeff Boberg said<\/p>\n<p>It was the third time Svetlana Kalganova from Westlake Village had\u00a0 volunteered and she said, like others, she does it because she hikes a lot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople enjoy feeling useful and doing something for the community and they\u00a0 are doing something for themselves because they use those trails,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Up next, in 2014, according to Foord, will be the construction of a new\u00a0 trailhead adjacent to the city\u2019s Hazardous Household Waste facility at the\u00a0 Municipal Service Center at 1993 Rancho Conejo Boulevard.
