The clouds are parted enough to see the top of Mauna Loa from the Mauna Kea Visitor's Center

The road that leads from the visitors center to the astronomical observatories at the Mauna Kea summit. This is a 4-wheel drive only road so we couldn't go up in our front-wheel drive rental car.

IMG_5347.jpg
The tube is pretty big!
IMG_5349.jpg

IMG_5353.jpg
The other end of the lava tube. Time to climb back to the surface.
IMG_5354.jpg
The tube continues on past this place where it's collapsed
IMG_5355.jpg

IMG_5357.jpg
Further along, the collapse is worse and longer
IMG_5359.jpg
From here, we explore the path of the lava tube from the surface
IMG_5361.jpg
You can see the path of the collapsed tube by the depression in the lava

From this point, you can see the snow-capped peaks of both Mauna Kea (barely, on the left) and Mauna Loa (straight ahead, just left of the cloud bank).
IMG_5390.jpg
A better view of the peak of Mauna Kea. You can see the buildings and telescope housings at the top!

A closer view of the top.

There is a very distinct snow line!

People pulled over to watch the mountain and/or the sunset.

The sun is reflecting off one of the buildings
IMG_5432.jpg
The sun is about to set, casting a pink glow on the top of Mauna Kea. The buildings are now hidden by the clouds.
